ActionLaser’s Solution for Wastewater
Revolutionising Wastewater Filtration with Innovative Laser Perforation Technology
Tsukishima Kanyo Engineering (TSK), founded in 1905 in Tokyo, has been a pioneer in water and wastewater filtration solutions. A groundbreaking innovation was their development of a dual-concentric-screen sewage sludge filtration system, which aimed to double filtration capacity with no increase in plant footprint.
The Problem: TSK conceived the idea of a dual-concentric-screen filtration system using clog resistant filtration screens. The challenge was to design screens with precise holes that would allow sludge to pass through both inner and outer screens without blockage; and screens that can be readily cleaned in place.
Brief:TSK tasked ActionLaser with developing stainless-steel filtration screens featuring clog resistant holes of specific sizes, angles, and shapes. These screens needed to to achieve very long life, while ensuring efficient sludge filtration.
The Process:Over three years, TSK collaborated with ActionLaser’s engineers to determine the optimal specifications for the filtration screens. Key considerations included the size, number, angle, thickness, and shape of each hole in the stainless-steel medium. ActionLaser’s expertise and ability to laser drill holes significantly smaller than the screen thickness, and at precise angles, proved pivotal in achieving screen strength and longevity, while meeting the filtration requirements.
The Solution: Through iterative design and rigorous testing, ActionLaser produced screens with three different hole sizes, allowing for the effective removal of particles of varying sizes in the sewage filtration process. This breakthrough enabled TSK to commercialise its novel wastewater filtration system, while surpassing traditional filtration capabilities.
Outcome and Benefits: The collaborative effort between TSK and ActionLaser resulted in the successful commercialisation of the innovative dual-concentric screen sewage sludge filtration system. Since its introduction in 2003, numerous installations of the novel system have been implemented across Japan, providing trouble-free running for two decades. The solution addressing the small footprint requirement using vertical filtration elements; and its long-term deployment, underscore the effectiveness and reliability of the system.
Conclusion: The success of this innovative project rested on TSK’s willingness to consider and try new ideas in collaboration with the world’s leader in patented laser perforation. Twenty years on, ActionLaser continues to support TSK with screens for existing intsallations and new projects, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two companies. ActionLaser is the pioneer of laser drilled filtration screens and can help OEMs find new solutions at the heart of their filtration processes, for everyday or complex requirement to best meet customer needs.
